Renoir, 90s Brit Art, Aphrodite and a Hockney Dachshund Lead the Week in Art
The National Gallery in London opens 'Renoir and Love' on 3 October, running until 31 January, showcasing impressionist paintings that are both joyful and sumptuous yet realist and raw. Tate Britain presents 'The 90s: Art and Fashion' from 8 October to 14 February, re-examining the fin de siècle decade by placing fashion alongside art. At the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, 'Aphrodite: The Making of a Goddess' runs from 8 October to 11 April, tracing the ancient deity of love and desire—often called Venus—through works by Botticelli, Michelangelo Pistoletto and others. Mike Nelson's installation 'Double Negative (The Clown)' opens at Modern Art Oxford from 3 October to 11 April. The Royal Academy's 'Painting the French Riviera' features masterpieces by Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse but is described as a weary slog, running until 31 January. David Hockney's 'Dog Painting 17' (1995), depicting his dachshund Stanley, is estimated at £1.5m–£2.5m and will be auctioned on 14 October during the Frieze art fair; the public can view it free at Christie's in London from Thursday. Other news includes a dispute over a Cairo mural showing Tutankhamun with dark skin, and an 'almost mythical' private collection with a Van Gogh, Cézanne and Monet up for sale. The week's masterpiece is Jean-Baptiste Pater's 'Fête Galante' (probably about 1721–5), a genre invented by his teacher Antoine Watteau, at the National Gallery, London.
