Rembrandt 1632: The Year That Made a Brand at Kassel's Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel presents 'Rembrandt 1632 – Entstehung einer Marke', focusing on the pivotal year when Rembrandt moved from Leiden to Amsterdam, partnered with art dealer Hendrick Uylenburgh, and launched his portrait career. In 1632, he produced at least 32 paintings and six etchings, though his pace later slowed to three to four paintings per year by the late 1640s. The exhibition lacks major works like 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' (held by the Mauritshuis) and 'The Abduction of Europa', but compensates with a video bringing Tulp to life, self-portraits showing his growing self-confidence, and high-quality workshop copies. Highlights include reunited pendant portraits of a man cutting his pen and his wife from Vienna, and portraits of friends Jacques de Gheyn III and Maurits Huygens, kept together per their testament. Works by contemporary Jan Lievens are also on view. The exhibition runs through an unspecified date in 2026.
