Reggie Burrows Hodges' MICAS Show Struggles Against 17th-Century Fortress Architecture

Reggie Burrows Hodges (b. 1965) is set to unveil his inaugural solo exhibition in Europe, titled 'Mela,' at the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) located in Floriana, Malta. This exhibition showcases approximately thirty new pieces influenced by his residency on the island during 2024-2025. 'Mela' embodies Hodges' immersive artistic style, transitioning from themes of Afro-American heritage to Maltese imagery, such as construction sites and the shadows reminiscent of Caravaggio. Curated by Edith Devaney, the display comprises four series: 'Labor,' 'Seascapes,' 'Buoy,' and an outdoor sound installation. A highlight of the show, 'Mamajamma' (2025), offers a fresh take on Caravaggio's 'Beheading of Saint John the Baptist' (1608), depicting it as a Maltese water polo match.
