Refn and Kojima's 'Satellites II' Lands at Hotel Chelsea for Prada Mode

From June 3 to 7, 2025, New York's Hotel Chelsea will host the expanded version of 'Satellites II,' a collaborative installation by Nicolas Winding Refn and Hideo Kojima, as part of Prada Mode, the cultural initiative by the Italian fashion house. This installation reimagines the historic hotel as a space station adorned with silver and cloud designs, showcasing vintage television sets that display conversations between Refn and Kojima on themes such as identity, creativity, connection, and mortality in both English and Japanese. This project builds upon their initial collaboration, 'Satellites,' which premiered at Prada's Aoyama store in Tokyo in 2025. Their friendship, which began over ten years ago, was sparked when Kojima, known for the Metal Gear series, contacted Refn after the 2011 release of 'Drive.' They prefer to communicate through images, music, and emojis instead of words. The installation encapsulates their mutual fascination with UFOs and emotional experiences, with Kojima expressing that it reveals 'what we think about, what we fear, how we fail.' Refn emphasized that the work challenges the notion of measuring creativity by success or failure, describing 'Satellites' as an emotion. The pair plans to meet in Rome, where Refn has proposed the idea of co-curating a film festival.
