Refik Anadol's Dataland Opens in Los Angeles as World's First AI Art Museum

exhibition · 2026-06-09

On June 20, Refik Anadol's Dataland, the inaugural AI art museum globally, launched in Los Angeles. This for-profit establishment spans 25,000 sq. ft within the Grand LA development, designed by Frank Gehry, and utilizes over 500 million pixels to craft immersive experiences. Guests don wristbands that monitor their heart rates and physical responses, which are integrated into the artwork, while a neck ring emits 12 scents from L'Oreal Luxe, activated by this biodata. Featured exhibits include Machine Dreams: Rainforest, inspired by Anadol's trip to the Yawanawá community in the Amazon, and The Infinity Room, a mirrored audiovisual space influenced by Dan Flavin, Yayoi Kusama, and James Turrell. Anadol collaborates with Google Art & Culture and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for music. Tickets begin at $49, and Melissa Yunk from the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board describes Dataland as a pioneer among tech-centric institutions, alongside the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in September. Anadol envisions the museum as a space for imagination, where artworks can "feel us back."
