Redmond Airport Terminal Expansion by Hennebery Eddy Architects

The Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) in central Oregon is undergoing a $180 million terminal expansion to double its capacity, designed by Hennebery Eddy Architects in collaboration with RS&H and built by Skanska. The project responds to the region's high desert landscape with a curtain wall facade framing views of the Cascade Range, volcanic formations, and sagebrush plains. A calibrated daylighting strategy balances natural light with glare control and thermal comfort. The exterior features a distinctive motif of the Cascade Mountains created by sunshade fins, which also mitigate challenges of large glazed areas. Perforated solar screens protect agent workstations. The terrazzo floor incorporates a geographic pattern of the Deschutes River with color variations representing water depth and flow. A mass timber structure adds warmth to the terminal. The expansion adds over 7,432 square meters to one end of the existing terminal, including a new second-level hold room with seven boarding bridges, expanded waiting areas, seating, and concessions. The layout is designed to facilitate future expansion in the opposite direction. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2028.
