Rediscovering the Women Painters of Munich's Neue Pinakothek
The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen has introduced a new initiative that showcases women artists instrumental in developing the Neue Pinakothek's collection, despite their exclusion from the Munich Academy until 1920. Intern Charlotte Price examines the role of private art schools in late 19th-century Munich that provided training for women. Notable artists include Emilie von Palmenberg (1861-1934), Bertha Wegmann (1847-1926), Olga Weiß (1853-1903), Anna Peters (1843-1926), and Tina Blau (1845-1916). Wegmann established a studio alongside Jeanna Bauck (1849-1926). Artists such as Blau, along with her pupils Margarethe von Kurowski (1853-1907) and Marie Bischoff (1874-1961), challenged conventions in plein-air painting. The article highlights the significant influence of these previously overlooked artists on the collection.
