Red Hook's Design Scene: Piscina Studio, Entrance Gallery and a Waterfront Creative District
Red Hook, a quaint neighborhood in western Brooklyn, has recently attracted a vibrant design community in addition to its established art scene. Natalie Shook, a painter and furniture maker, relocated from Williamsburg in 2013 after discovering a warehouse filled with plumbing supplies. She runs Piscina Studio, a makers' co-op where around 30 artists work with wood, ceramics, and metal. Her husband, architect Wes Rozen, also operates from the same space. In 2022, Piscina opened a shop on Van Brunt Street, featuring mostly in-house creations, and added a gallery this year. Other members include woodworker Michael Haynes and designer Devin Wilde. Keti Chichinadze, from Georgia, creates contemporary furniture and is looking for a new space nearby. The Entrance gallery, founded by Louis Shannon, showcases large sculptures outdoors and hosts various community events. Shannon affectionately describes himself as part of the area’s eclectic community. The neighborhood's lack of subway access gives it a unique charm reminiscent of a New England fishing town.
