Raqs Media Collective's First Indian Solo Show in a Decade Opens at LAMO in Ladakh

exhibition · 2026-09-24

The Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO) is hosting "The Time is Never Ripe," the first solo exhibition in India in over ten years by the Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective. Curated by Qamoos Bukhari, a native of Kashmir, the 25-work show is installed in LAMO's seventeenth-century stone building in Leh's Old Town, a heritage structure that once belonged to the King's financial adviser and an artisan. The exhibition features works such as "Chimera Chorus" (2025), "Wayfarers" (2025), "Ferment (Sear)" (2026), "An Infra-vocabulary for Capital" (2023), "Seven Billion and One" (2015), "Blood Moon" (2025), and "Waiting" (2013), exploring time, climate catastrophe, and humanity's broken bond with nature. Raqs members Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula, and Shuddhabrata Sengupta have addressed these themes for over three decades. The show is set against Ladakh's climate-endangered status and tourism pressures—over 200,000 visitors in June and July 2026 alone—and follows recent flash floods in Nepal. Bukhari's curatorial approach places works in conversation with Himalayan society's relationship to air, water, land, and pastoral movement, offering local audiences alternative ways to comprehend time amid political conflict and ecological crisis. The exhibition runs in LAMO's artisan wing and financial adviser's kitchen, with no nails disrupting the heritage walls, and is featured in ArtReview Asia's Autumn 2026 issue.
