Rana Begum and Webb Yates erect pylon-inspired fence tower for LFA

For the London Festival of Architecture, artist Rana Begum and engineering firm Webb Yates have unveiled No.1616 Fence, a 13-meter-high structure constructed from industrial powder-coated mesh fencing. Situated outside Space House, which has recently undergone renovations by Squire and Partners, this tower marks the third collaboration between the two, utilizing fencing materials. Drawing inspiration from electricity pylons, the installation challenges perceptions of boundaries and highlights society's desensitization to barriers. Begum remarked on the material's prevalence in both rural and urban settings, along with its associations with exclusion. The tower's shifting colors, influenced by viewer perspective, create an illusion of visibility. Designed for complete disassembly, Begum hopes it will find a permanent location; if not, it will be returned for a refund.
