RAMSA completes Tang Wing for American Democracy at New York Historical

Robert AM Stern Architects (RAMSA) has completed the Tang Wing for American Democracy, the first expansion of the New York Historical museum in 75 years. The wing is affixed to the back of the main building along West 76th Street on the Upper West Side and is informed by the original early-1900s design by York & Sawyer and a 1938 expansion by Walker & Gillette. The neoclassical facade uses granite from the same quarry in Deer Isle, Maine, as the original structure, with bronze windows and a copper cornice. Inside, the triple-height Klingenstein Family Gallery anchors the space, surrounded by smaller exhibition areas, outdoor spaces, and a basement conservation studio by Sam Anderson Architects. The fourth floor will eventually house the American LGBTQ+ Museum, slated to open in 2028. A rooftop garden by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects is set to be completed later this year. RAMSA partner Graham S Wyatt emphasized a scholarly approach to harmonizing with the historic architecture.
