Raja Ravi Varma: European Realism Meets Indian Sensibility in a Pioneering Oeuvre
Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was an esteemed Indian painter known for blending European realism with Indian artistic traditions. He was born into nobility at Kilimanoor Palace in Travancore, now Kerala, and received support from Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal of Travancore and later Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda. His artistic education included watercolor techniques from Rama Swami Naidu and oil painting from Dutch artist Theodor Jenson. Varma created portraits of Indian royalty, British officials, and Hindu deities, along with illustrations from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. In 1894, he founded the Ravi Varma Fine Arts Lithographic Press in Bombay, making oleographs of Hindu gods accessible to the public. His notable works include Stolen Interview or Hesitation (1880) and Goddess Saraswathi (1896). He received various accolades, and in 2013, a crater on Mercury was named in his honor. His press was sold in 1903 and operated until 1973, closing entirely in 1980. Varma's influence continues through his innovative techniques and widely available imagery.
