Ragnar Kjartansson's 'Politics of the Obvious' Opens at Buffalo AKG

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is hosting 'Politics of the Obvious,' a major exhibition by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, marking one of his most ambitious shows in the United States. Half of the works on display are making their American museum debut at this venue. The exhibition, which features six immersive installations created over more than two decades, transforms familiar phrases, clichés, and gestures into strange, provocative, and emotionally resonant experiences. Kjartansson, known for his work across performance, music, and image, uses these deceptively simple refrains to create shared emotional experiences from commonplace scenes. One highlighted piece is the video 'Scenes from Western Culture (The Boat)' (2015), in which an elegantly dressed couple repeatedly sets off into a tranquil sea, with the man remaining constant while the woman's appearance changes. The exhibition is currently on view at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
