Rafael Bonachela on Leaving Sydney Dance Company and His Journey

Rafael Bonachela, artistic director of Sydney Dance Company (SDC), is stepping down after 18 years. In an exit interview, he reflects on his career, from his working-class upbringing in Franco-era Spain to becoming one of Europe's most celebrated choreographers. Bonachela took his first dance class at 15, joined Rambert in London, and later choreographed for Kylie Minogue. He moved to Sydney in 2009 after the death of Tanja Liedtke. His final work with SDC, 'The Journey Itself Is Home', a collaboration with Bryce Dessner, opens at the Sydney Opera House. The piece is inspired by the 17th-century Japanese poet Bashō and explores themes of home and transience. Bonachela also highlights initiatives like New Breed and PPY that fostered new talent. He plans to depart after the premiere.
