Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration Opens in London

This week marks the opening of the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, a significant new artistic venue established by the renowned illustrator at the historic New River Head site in Islington, which dates back to the 17th century and was once a waterworks. The centre boasts a permanent gallery showcasing Blake's artwork, with its inaugural exhibition 'Quentin Blake: Performance' (5 June-1 April 2027) highlighting his theatrical inspirations, including representations of Laurence Olivier in 'The Entertainer' (1957) at the Royal Court Theatre. Blake, famed for illustrating over 500 books, including those by Roald Dahl, likens his drawing technique to acting. Temporary exhibitions include 'Queer as Comics' (5 June-4 October), featuring LGBTQ+ artists like Tove Jansson and Rupert Kinnard. A solo exhibition by Murugiah (5 June-31 August) will kick off collaborations with UK illustrators. Funded with £12.5m from various sources, including The National Lottery Heritage Fund (£3.5m), the centre also offers a free library and learning spaces, charging £16.50 for adult entry. Previously, it operated in King's Cross from 2014 to 2020. Blake’s extensive archive of 40,000 items is stored separately.
