Prudence Heward's Portraits of Modern Canadian Women

Prudence Heward (1896–1947) was a Canadian painter known for her figurative works depicting women with psychological depth and unidealized realism. A member of the Beaver Hall Group (founded 1920 in Montreal) and co-founder of the Canadian Group of Painters (1933), she helped shape a distinct Canadian art scene. Her preferred term for her portraits was 'figures.' Five key works illustrate her approach: 'At the Theatre' (1928, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts) captures two women in a theater, identified as sisters of fellow artist Sarah Robertson. 'Rollande' (1929, National Gallery of Canada) portrays a rural girl in a defiant pose; it was exhibited in 1930 at the Fifth Annual Exhibition of Canadian Art and later toured internationally. 'Girl Under a Tree' (1931, Art Gallery of Hamilton) presents a reclining nude in a public setting, challenging traditional male gaze, with Cubist background influences from her European travels. 'Girl in the Window' (1941, Art Gallery of Windsor) is her only indoor portrait of a Black subject, prompting discussions about power dynamics and vulnerability. 'Farmer's Daughter' (1945, National Gallery of Canada) was one of her last works, painted while her health declined due to chronic asthma; a looser style reflects her condition. Heward died in 1947 at age 51. Her work gained renewed recognition in exhibitions like 'Uninvited' at the National Gallery of Canada in 2023.
