Protoplain Architects Completes Four Bamboo Public Baths in Taiwan's National Forest

Protoplain Architects, led by Yu-Hsin Yeh, has completed four public baths in the Basianshan National Forest recreation area in Taichung, Taiwan, using locally grown bamboo. The project, curated by Miwa Negoro and covering 362 m², was completed in 2024. Each bath employs one of four distinct construction methods: new construction, renovation, interior remodeling, and a canopy structure. The design team included Tzu Hung Hsu, Hung Yi Cheng, Jessi Jie-Shan Lin, Fu Hao, and Shiu. Suppliers included Bamboo Tectonic Atelier, TOUDEI, Wen's Phoenix Corp., and Yumu Manufacture & Research. Landscape architecture was handled by ProtoPlain Tectonic Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., with construction by DCH Construction Co., Ltd. Mechanical engineering by WeiHung Engineering company and structural engineering by Jian-Min Li Structural Design. The project aims to embody local character, bamboo tectonics, and mountain forest imagery.
