Powder Art Foundation Debuts Jenny Holzer, Rose Wylie, and Xu Zhen Sculptures for 2026–2027 Ski Season

exhibition · 2026-10-08

The Powder Art Foundation (PAF) has introduced three new outdoor sculptures for the ski season of 2026–2027 in Utah's Wasatch Mountains. The artists behind these pieces are Jenny Holzer, Rose Wylie, and Xu Zhen. Holzer's THE EYE (2026) showcases a quartzite boulder inscribed with a phrase inspired by poet May Swenson. Wylie’s Pale-Pink Pineapple/Bomb (2025) is a bronze work that contemplates themes of colonization and globalization. Xu Zhen’s Hello (2021–2022) reimagines a Corinthian column as a snake silhouette. Established after Reed Hastings took a majority stake in Powder Mountain in 2023, PAF now exhibits 16 works, including Nancy Holt’s Starfire (1986), and is open year-round for hiking among the installations.

  • The foundation is located on 8,000 acres in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains and now has 16 works on view.
  • Jenny Holzer’s THE EYE is a 300-million-year-old quartzite boulder carved with a phrase inspired by the late Logan, Utah, poet May Swenson.
  • Rose Wylie’s Pale-Pink Pineapple/Bomb is a towering bronze sculpture coated in pink paint, inspired by a pineapple found at a Guyanese market, addressing colonization, globalization, and the decline of the British Empire.
  • Xu Zhen’s Hello is a brass-and-stainless-steel work transforming a Corinthian column into a monumental snake, described as a clash of cultures.

  • PAF has a partnership with Dia Art Foundation and draws on the legacy of Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson.
  • Nancy Holt’s Starfire (1986), made of eight recessed fire pits arranged like the Big Dipper and the North Star, is installed at the base of Powder Mountain’s Skylodge.
  • A 1980s Bruce Nauman and a 2011 James Turrell from his Ganzfeld series (initially shown at the 54th Venice Biennale) await installation.
  • PAF is accessible year-round, with hiking among the installations in warmer months.
