Populous Unveils Renovation Plans for Kolkata's Historic Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium

Architecture studio Populous has announced comprehensive redevelopment plans for Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India, an iconic cricket venue built in 1864. The project will increase seating capacity from 68,000 to 85,000, adding 17,000 seats with a 30% boost in corporate hospitality options. Associate principal Pranav Kashyap emphasized a fan-first design strategy that enhances the existing structure rather than expanding it, aiming to improve both event-day experiences and non-event-day opportunities. New features include the Sky Deck observation lounge overlooking the park and river, ground-level fan zones, a museum, a hall of fame, and digital engagement zones. Principal Siddharth Soni stated the redevelopment will create a 21st-century venue focused on safety, sustainability, and fan experience, preparing it for evolving cricket formats. Populous described Eden Gardens, currently the world's third-largest cricket stadium, as "cricket's answer to the Colosseum." The firm is concurrently working on other global stadium projects including the Kop Stand at Wrexham AFC's STōK Cae Ras in Wales and the 115,000-seat Grand Stade Hassan II in Morocco. WilkinsonEyre is also redeveloping stands at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
