Populous and Moody Nolan reveal design for Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers arena

architecture-design · 2026-09-08

Architecture firms Populous and Moody Nolan have unveiled designs for a new professional basketball and hockey arena in Philadelphia, intended to serve as the home of the NBA's 76ers, the NHL's Flyers, and a forthcoming WNBA team. The circular structure, featuring stacked concentric rings with alternating glazed facades and LED displays, draws inspiration from the city's iconic Spectrum arena, which was designed by SOM in 1967 and demolished in 2011. The new venue will replace the Xfinity Mobile Arena (completed in 1996) within the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, near the city's NFL stadium. The exterior's stacked, cantilevered bands aim to break down the typical arena scale and create a recognizable landmark. The surrounding plaza will include active outdoor spaces, a social staircase, and restaurants, with the final form still pending fan feedback. The project, a joint venture by owners Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (76ers) and Comcast Spectacor (Flyers), is described as the largest fully privately funded project in Philadelphia's history. The design references the Spectrum, which hosted both teams for nearly three decades, reimagined through a contemporary lens. The announcement was made via a press release from the Flyers and 76ers, emphasizing the arena's role as a new gathering place connecting to the city's storied sports heritage.
