Pop-up exhibition 'Freiraum Kunst' at Schloss Bellevue before renovation

Until June 28, Schloss Bellevue, the residence of the German president, will showcase the pop-up exhibition 'Freiraum Kunst' prior to its extensive renovation set to begin on July 1. Curated by Anh-Linh Ngo, the vice president of the Akademie der Künste (AdK), the exhibition includes works from notable artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Jürgen Böttcher (Strawalde), Gregor Schneider, Boris Michailov, Monica Bonvicini, Karin Sander, Jochen Gerz, Christian Awe, and Bjørn Melhus. This exhibition delves into themes of democratic representation and the interplay between state and culture, especially in light of budget cuts and discussions on artistic freedom. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated, 'Art is not a luxury but an essential part of democratic debate,' although the show’s lack of overt political messaging has led some to perceive it as cautious.
