Pompeii Treasures to Debut in US at Dallas Museum of Art
This December, the Dallas Museum of Art will present the US premiere of 'Journey Through Pompeii: Masterpieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.' The exhibition showcases more than 160 artifacts from Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabia, including stucco reliefs, frescoes, marble sculptures, mosaics, and household items, all preserved due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. Organized around themes such as politics, sports, and domestic life, the collection provides a glimpse into the daily existence of ancient Romans. Notable pieces include a black-and-white mosaic depicting a skeleton with wine jugs, a silver kantharos from the House of Menander, and a stucco relief of an athlete. The exhibition will also feature a replica of a plaster cast of an eruption victim. Assistant curator Anabelle Gambert-Jouan expressed excitement about sharing these artifacts with Texas audiences, while director Brian Ferris highlighted the timeless bond between humanity and the appreciation of beauty. Following its Dallas engagement, the exhibition will move to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond and the Frist Art Museum in Nashville.
