Podcast Marks Gaza Ceasefire Anniversary; Robert Ryman Survey Opens at Barbican; Katherine Hubbard at Studio Voltaire
This Saturday, October 10, marks one year since the ceasefire in Gaza, but violence is still ongoing. The UN Human Rights Office reported in August that over 1,200 Palestinians have died due to Israeli actions since last year. Sarvy Geranpayeh, a journalist for The Art Newspaper, has been covering Palestinian artists since the Israeli bombings began after Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023. She talks with Ben Luke about her conversations with four artists in Gaza dealing with trauma and displacement. One artist, Ahmed Muhanna, has started painting on aid boxes because he can’t find art supplies. Additionally, a new exhibition featuring US artist Robert Ryman opened at the Barbican Art Gallery from October 9 to February 28, 2027. Ben also chats with curator Wells Fray-Smith there. The episode showcases Katherine Hubbard's ongoing work, The Great Room, at Studio Voltaire, which explores the effects of a progressive brain disease on her mother. This piece will be on display until January 10, 2027.
