Pit Garden in Passive House by D Environmental Design System Laboratory

D Environmental Design System Laboratory, led by Kikuma Watanabe, completed a 103 m² pit garden house in 2025. The design reinterprets ancient pit dwellings as passive houses, using solar heat for winter warmth and night breezes for summer cooling, replacing the traditional central furnace. The project was curated by Miwa Negoro, with design by Kazunori Matsumoto, structural engineering by SHUNYA TAKAHASHI TECTONIC STUDIO, and construction by Kuwataka Kensetsu.
