Pina Bausch's 'Palermo Palermo' Revival in Charleroi Dance Program

Pina Bausch's 1989 dance theater piece 'Palermo Palermo' is being revived in Charleroi, Belgium. The work, originally created after Bausch's company spent three weeks in Palermo, Sicily, in spring 1989, explores Sicilian identity through movement and ritual. The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch ensemble is performing the piece at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi as part of the Charleroi Danse programming. The production examines themes of masculinity, femininity, religious devotion, and urban life in Palermo, using local traditions like funeral marches and Sicilian dialect. This revival marks 37 years since the work's creation and follows performances in numerous international cities.
