Pierre Jahan Retrospective at Galerie Jean-François Cazeau, Paris

exhibition · 2026-10-17

Galerie Jean-François Cazeau presents a retrospective of photographer Pierre Jahan, opening October 24 and running through December 23, 2026, at 8 rue Sainte-Anastase in the 75003. Around forty prints trace the two lives of a photographer who settled in Paris in 1933 and joined Brassaï, Doisneau and Cartier-Bresson in the street. The exhibition is labelled by the French Ministry of Culture for the bicentenary of photography. The gallery also brings Jahan to Paris Photo at the Grand Palais in mid-November. The hang opens in the 1930s with images such as a barber for ladies and gentlemen on rue de la Gaîté and a hand placed over eyes. Jahan documented the Occupation and the Liberation without embellishment before turning to dream: photograms, superimpositions, photomontages and burnt edges. Humanist by morning, surrealist by evening, he never signed a manifesto. He died in 2003 and awaited this rediscovery, which also reveals the range of techniques he tried. Entry is free, Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 7pm, near Métro Saint-Sébastien-Froissart on line 8.
