Pierre and Cedric Koukjian Install 'SAWA' Sculpture at Beit Beirut

A stainless steel sculpture titled 'SAWA' (meaning 'together' in Arabic) has been installed on the exterior of Beit Beirut, a museum and cultural center in the Lebanese capital. Created by father-and-son artist duo Pierre and Cedric Koukjian, the work is made from hand-hammered stainless steel and reflects light and the surrounding landscape. Beit Beirut is housed in the Barakat building, designed by architect Youssef Aftimus in 1924 and expanded by Fouad Kozah in 1932, located along the former Green Line that divided the city during the Lebanese Civil War. The building, still bearing bullet holes and broken columns from the conflict, underwent restorations beginning in 2009. 'SAWA' underscores the museum's ethos of contemplation and cultural exchange, serving as a dynamic contribution to Beirut's public art. The Koukjians have collaborated since 2017, creating sculptures that synthesize industrial construction with gravity-defying compositions. Last year, they installed 'Chaînes de Lumière' in Bikfaya, a monumental work featuring seven stainless steel links. A spokesperson noted that 'SAWA' embodies values of connection and hope, complementing the museum's mission of preserving history while encouraging reflection on the city's future.
