Piedra y Agua: Former Guardia Civil Post Transformed into Riverfront Home

Glocal Design Magazine's 89th edition, 'Visionarias del espacio,' features 15 women architects and interior designers expanding the conversation on architecture, design, and interiorism in Mexico, with collector covers by Prince Láuder and Jimena Estíbaliz. In Sanlúcar de Guadiana, Huelva, the project Piedra y Agua converts ruins of a 19th-century Guardia Civil border post into a home connected to the river, memory, and climate. Designed by Zurita Studio and Kalibra Arquitectura, the house consolidates existing stone walls and adds a discreet extension. The interior is a continuous sequence without doors, with privacy achieved through wall thickness and alignments. Reuse guides every decision: roof beams form stairs and kitchen, floor material extends to countertops and showers. The house avoids air conditioning through thermal inertia, cross ventilation, and photovoltaic energy. The roof slopes opposite the terrain to protect privacy and rises toward the Guadiana River, with a single window framing the fluvial landscape.
