Photographer Documents NYC Bird Rescue Volunteers in New Project

Photographer Travis Huggett is creating a series documenting volunteers from the New York City Bird Alliance Transporters, who rescue injured birds across the city and transport them to the Wild Bird Fund rehabilitation center on the Upper West Side. The project began several summers ago when Huggett started participating with his son, and has evolved into formal portraits capturing the volunteers' work. Birds are commonly injured by window collisions, traffic, or entanglement, with pigeons representing most rescues though rarer species appear during migrations. The photographs aim to highlight this little-known community operating within the urban environment.
