Philip Treacy's Word Hats: From Britney Spears to Dior

Philip Treacy's renowned word hats, introduced in 2001 as part of his couture collection, have adorned celebrities such as Isabella Blow, Valentino, and Lady Gaga, and were recently showcased in Jonathan Anderson's Dior Cruise 2025 presentation at LACMA. Crafted from Yokohama chicken feathers sourced from Treacy's late friend, designer Anthony Price, each hat requires three days for sculpting, shaping, baking, and assembly. The inaugural word hat, which read "Hat," made its debut in 2001. Britney Spears donned a custom "Britney" hat for the November 2001 Vogue cover, photographed by Herb Ritts at Anna Wintour's request. Blow, upset by Spears's choice, sought a "Blow" hat for her M.A.C. project. Valentino Garavani commissioned a red "Valentino" hat for his spring 2002 couture show, worn by Karolína Kurková. In 2011, Lady Gaga showcased a slasher-font version on Jimmy Kimmel. Anderson's Dior collection, inspired by Edward Ruscha, included words like "Dior," "Star," "Buzz," and "Flow," with Blow's influence evident in his mood board. Treacy believes the hats' lasting allure lies in the juxtaposition of the feathers' delicacy and resilience.
