Philadelphia Community Design Collaborative Marks 35 Years Amid Digital Isolation Challenges

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the Community Design Collaborative, a pro bono design group based in Philadelphia, has seen thousands of design experts dedicate countless volunteer hours to various grassroots initiatives, such as schools, parks, community centers, and affordable housing. In early 2025, Zion Baptist Church commenced the Rev. Leon H. Sullivan Community Impact Center project, an $18 million renovation of its historic annex, with the assistance of over 200 volunteer architects, planners, engineers, and designers. Despite these achievements, the organization grapples with challenges stemming from digital isolation and a drop in in-person engagement. Pre-pandemic, in-person workshops attracted 30% more participants, while current projects draw about 75 for in-person sessions and 30 online. Tya Winn, the executive director, stresses the importance of personal interaction and trust in under-resourced and immigrant communities, raising concerns about the potential delay in future legacy projects due to waning volunteer consistency.
