Phar Lap: The Electro-Swing Musical Returns for 2027 Sydney Season and National Tour

Hayes Theatre Co has announced that the popular show, Phar Lap: The Electro-Swing Musical, will return in 2027 for an extended run in Sydney at Carriageworks from July 8 to August 8, followed by a nationwide tour. This musical, created by Steven Kramer, first premiered at Hayes Theatre in 2025 and quickly became a hit, selling out its shows. It won three Sydney Theatre Awards that year: Best Production of a Musical, Best Direction for Sheridan Harbridge, and Best Leading Performance for Joel Granger, who will reprise his role as Phar Lap, with Harbridge directing again. The tour will include stops at various venues, including the Melbourne Theatre Company and Geelong Arts Centre. Artistic directors Richard Carroll and Victoria Falconer praised the show, calling it "funny, clever, and a new Australian classic." The production blends electro-swing with influences from Duke Ellington to Daft Punk, telling the story of Phar Lap's rise to fame and the surrounding gambling scandals. This revival is seen as a positive development for Australia’s live performance sector, which is facing rising costs and financial difficulties.
