Pepponi Art: The Faces Memory Refuses to Forget

Birgit Kalkofen, a self-taught artist working under the name Pepponi Art, creates paintings that blend personal memory, cultural observation, and vivid color. Born in Germany, she spent over a decade in Kenya and traveled extensively through Europe, America, Asia, and Africa, experiences that deeply influenced her visual language. Her work features stylized figures, expressive faces, and ornamental patterns, often using acrylic and mixed media on wood. Her paintings have been exhibited at Art Expo New York and Scope Miami, and are held in private collections internationally. One of her most significant works, a painting of a Buddhist monk inspired by her time in Thailand in the 1970s, was kept for nearly eighteen years before she allowed it to be sold, describing the moment as 'the monk moving on.' Her recent works respond to political tensions and climate change, including pieces titled 'Which Direction We Go' and 'Change,' and the 'Nature 2.0' series. Kalkofen's practice demonstrates how travel and lived experience can be transformed into a distinctive artistic language that balances emotional accessibility with symbolic ambiguity.
