Pepe Viyuela stars as a furious, anti-capitalist Timon in Shakespeare's rarely staged play

Pepe Viyuela plays Timon of Athens in a new production directed by Hernán Gené, premiered at the Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Mérida. Viyuela's performance, staged at the Teatro Romano de Mérida, portrays Timon as a bitter, resentful proto-anarchist who turns against humanity after losing his fortune. The play is one of Shakespeare's lesser-known works, never performed in his lifetime and considered unfinished, possibly abandoned for Coriolanus. In Spain, it was previously staged by Ariel García Valdés with Lluís Homar in the 1990s and directed by Francisco Suárez at the same venue.
