Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem: A Cinematic Partnership

At the Venice Film Festival on September 8, 2026, Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz presented their ninth film together, 'Bunker', directed by Florian Zeller. For the first time, they portray a married couple on screen. The couple, who met in 1992 on the set of Bigas Luna's 'Prosciutto prosciutto', have since appeared in films such as 'Carne trémula' (1997), 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' (2008), 'The Counselor' (2013), 'Escobar' (2017), and 'Everybody Knows' (2018). Their real-life relationship began in 2008 during the filming of Woody Allen's 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona', though they did not start dating until after production ended. Zeller chose them specifically for their real-life chemistry, stating that if one had refused, he would not have cast the other. The film explores the dynamics of a married couple facing disruptions from a neighbor's construction and a commission to build a billionaire's bunker. Cruz and Bardem have developed strategies to maintain their privacy and professional equality, including negotiating contracts together to ensure equal pay for equal roles. In 2022, they were both nominated for Oscars, a rare simultaneous achievement for a couple. Their ability to work together while advancing their individual careers sets them apart from other famous acting couples like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, or Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, whose collaborations ended with their relationships.
