Pend Adds Skinny Red Brick Extension to Georgian Townhouse in Edinburgh's Newhaven

architecture-design · 2026-09-23

Pend, a Scottish architecture firm, has enlarged a Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh by incorporating a single-storey extension featuring slender red bricks that stand out against the light stone façade. Dubbed Newhaven, this development strengthens the link between the residence and its garden. The property previously had an elevated front and an unkempt conservatory. The new entrance opens directly into a living space, enhancing access to the kitchen and dining areas. Project architect Joanna Hobbs pointed out that the height of the original entrance posed privacy challenges. The design echoes the home's curved masonry with a circular skylight and rounded interior elements. A small study offers views of the garden, which includes a split pathway. Founded in 2021 by Jamie Anderson, Pend specializes in residential designs. Photography by Shaun Barton.
