Pemako Punakha: Bhutan's First Locally Owned Luxury Hotel Brand Opens in Punakha Valley

Pemako, the first Bhutanese-owned and operated luxury hotel brand, has opened its flagship property in Punakha valley. Run by the Tashi Group, the country's largest private conglomerate, Pemako Punakha opened in early 2024 after a seven-year build. The 60-acre retreat features 21 tented villas designed by Bill Bensley, with private pools and decks. The brand also operates Pemako Thimphu, originally built by India's Taj group, with plans for a comprehensive renovation and a new property designed by Bjarke Ingels slated for 2029. Pemako offers experiences rooted in Bhutanese customs, including traditional hot stone baths, yak butter massages, and farm-to-table dining at Alchemy House. The property is located in Punakha, known as Bhutan's bread basket, at a lower altitude than Paro.
