Pavel Pletnev Miniaturizes Russian Urban Decay in Jar-Based Installations

Pavel Pletnev, originally from Omsk and currently residing in Saint Petersburg, specializes in crafting miniature objects and installations that reimagine the often-overlooked aspects of modern Russian urban life into personal realms. His artistic approach, which he describes as a 'glorification of the chthonic, deconstruction of aesthetics, appropriation of memes,' embraces a blend of affection and irreverence, highlighting the unrefined and grim. What began as a childhood interest in model-making has transformed into a unique lens for exploring the city on a smaller scale. His miniature creations encourage viewers to engage with familiar structures as detailed subjects rather than mere background. In his 'worlds in jars' series, he encapsulates imagined environments within glass containers, resembling preserved specimens or miniature stage sets. The imperfections of the city are not hidden but serve as the foundation for its true essence. More of his work can be found on Instagram at @paulpats.
