Paulo Moreira Architects Transforms Security Shelters in Johannesburg

In Stjwetla, Johannesburg, Paulo Moreira Architects has completed two prototype 'Safety Shelters' (Refugios de seguridad) that reimagine the traditional guard booth. The project was initiated in response to requests from the K Stjwetla Patrollers, a volunteer group combating high crime rates in the settlement. The shelters are designed as dignified, open, and visible structures, contrasting with typically hostile security architecture. They were co-produced at key points in Stjwetla, built with local artisans, students, and residents using reused materials to ensure sustainability and accessibility. The project covers 50 m² and was completed in 2025. Curated by Susanna Moreira, the architecture was led by Paulo Moreira, with Kelvin-Alexandra-Frankenwald City Studio contributing.
