PAU and HNTB-HOK Unveil Design for New York's Penn Station Redevelopment

The redevelopment of Penn Station in New York City will be spearheaded by The Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU), teaming up with HNTB and HOK. This project aims to revamp one of the busiest rail hubs in North America by enhancing passenger movement, increasing capacity, and upgrading infrastructure. Construction is slated to start in 2027. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the station once housed the Beaux-Arts Pennsylvania Station, built by McKim, Mead & White in 1910 and demolished in the 1960s, sparking debates on preserving architectural heritage. Plans include a new entrance on Eighth Avenue, larger concourses, better waiting areas, and improved facilities, with designs showcasing a bright, open concourse that connects different transit options. Madison Square Garden will remain operational during the construction. PAU, established by Vishaan Chakrabarti and led by Ruchika Modi, has previously worked on notable projects like the Domino Sugar Refinery and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame expansion.
