PAU, Amtrak, Halmar Reveal $7B Penn Station Overhaul Plans

Last month, Halmar International was appointed as the master developer for the renovation of Penn Station. A press conference held at PAU's office included PAU's founder Vishaan Chakrabarti, Amtrak Special Advisor Andy Byford, and Halmar's Peter Cipriano. Byford projected the project's cost to be $7 billion, with construction anticipated to commence by the end of 2027 and to be completed within six years. He assured that there would be no fare increases for New Yorkers and confirmed that Block 780 will remain intact. PAU's design plans to eliminate the Infosys Theater, enhancing public circulation space by 165%, and features a monumental facade reminiscent of the original McKim, Mead & White station, along with three times the number of escalators and stairs. Renderings depict a grand civic entrance on Eighth Avenue, showcasing a blue-tiled ceiling and a staircase influenced by Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal. The design will also include bronze reliefs and eagle sculptures from the original station. Byford anticipates a through-running study from the Federal Railroad Administration in the coming weeks, referencing London's Thameslink and Crossrail as examples. Nate Sizemore from the U.S. Department of Transportation pledged substantial federal funding.
