Patrick Bérubé’s Mycelium Ruins at Musée d’art de Joliette

Patrick Bérubé’s inaugural solo exhibition, titled "(Ce)pendant, [(Now)ever]," is on display at the Musée d’art de Joliette in Quebec from June 20 to September 7, 2026. Curated by Marianne Cloutier, the exhibition features a single room adorned with white walls and a dusty pink carpet. The floor is intricately designed with square sections that are recessed, each filled with sand or soil, copper piping, and bronze or mycelium objects. The arrangement is inspired by the Japanese tea room. The centerpiece includes six sunken squares linked by copper conduits, showcasing a bronze piece in sand alongside a raw mycelium block on stone. Additional works consist of "At the root of…," a Jacquard weaving dyed with wild mushroom (Cortinarius sanguineus), and "Adaptation," which features mycelium leather slippers placed on embossed paper tiles. The exhibition is contextualized by a quote from philosopher Byung-Chul Han regarding the crisis of community as a crisis of resonance. Bérubé’s work, part of a trilogy, posits that heritage remains dynamic and evolving, with the mycelium continuing to transform even after the exhibition concludes.
