Pasta Shapes Inspire New Wave of Furniture and Decor Design

Pasta shapes are becoming a muse for furniture and decor designers, with several new collections and exhibitions highlighting the trend. In April, Artistic Tile, a luxury stone and tile company, posted an April Fools' joke on Instagram about a pasta-shaped mosaic line called Al Dente. After overwhelming positive response, the company decided to actually produce the tiles through its Tailored To program, adding vodka rigatoni and butter noodle options. At Milan Design Week, Artisia (a Barilla-owned company specializing in 3D-printed pasta) and Studio Yellowdot presented Edible Reveries, an exhibit featuring pasta-inspired furniture like a lounge seat, rocking chair, and ottoman, all 3D-printed from wood composite. Designer Chris Fusaro creates bronze objects and furniture using lost wax casting, including a Coquillettes Lamp and Mezze Maniche Chair. Lo & Co Interiors released an Al Dente hardware collection with orecchiette knobs and lasagna pulls, designed by Tali Roth and Arielle Lopresti. Designer Caleb Ferris won the 2023 ICFF Editors Award for Seating with his lasagna chair. Tara McCauley presented a lamp with real linguine at the Collectible Design Fair. The trend is seen as a playful, democratic form of design that evokes memory and humor.
