Passage Arts, New Dallas Nonprofit, Opens with James Surls Exhibition

This fall, Passage Arts, a newly established nonprofit led by veteran Dallas gallerist Kirk Hopper, will debut in a historic warehouse in Dallas. The first exhibition, titled "From the Old Growth," showcases the work of Texas artist James Surls and will kick off with a reception on Saturday, September 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. Situated at 845 South Trunk Avenue, near I-30 and I-45, the 7,500-square-foot warehouse, built in 1919, features 28-foot ceilings, original clerestory windows, and a 1,500-square-foot courtyard for outdoor displays. Following the closure of his gallery, Kirk Hopper Fine Art, in May after "Five Painters: New Myths," Hopper is embracing a nonprofit approach. The exhibition includes 25 sculptures and 18 drawings from Surls' 50-year career, co-curated by Susie Kalil, who will also oversee publications.
