Park Collective to Redesign Fascist-Era Milano Centrale Interiors

Italian interdisciplinary collective Park has been selected to redesign the ground floor and mezzanine levels of Milano Centrale, the fascist-era railway monument opened on July 1, 1931. The project, developed in dialogue with the Local Heritage Authority, targets a former luggage storage area converted into a retail gallery in 2010, which Park deemed architecturally incongruous. The redesign aims to transform the station into a contemporary urban hub by reinterpreting three architectural themes: monumentality, natural light, and material richness. New voids and openings will improve wayfinding between retail levels and platforms. An illuminated ceiling system inspired by the Galleria dei Mosaici will introduce diffuse light. Warm-toned metallic finishes, Botticino marble, and flooring patterns extending existing geometries will unify the commercial environment. Over 320,000 people pass through the station daily, which has 24 tracks and connects to the Milan Metro. The project is part of broader Italian heritage reinterpretations, including STARTT's access to archaeological areas behind the Pantheon in Rome and Stefano Boeri Architetti's transformation of an abandoned tram depot.
