other · 2026-06-04

Anisabelle Berès-Montanari, a prominent Parisian gallerist and former president of the Syndicat national des antiquaires (SNA), died at age 78. Born in Paris in 1948, she inherited the Galerie Berès, founded in 1952 by her mother Huguette Berès on quai Voltaire. The gallery specialized in Japanese prints, the Nabis, and French avant-gardes. Berès-Montanari studied law, history, and Russian, and worked as a documentalist at the Fondation Wildenstein before joining the family business in 1975. Under her leadership, the gallery organized landmark exhibitions on Kitagawa Utamaro (1976), Édouard Manet (1978), Toshusai Sharaku (1980), and the Nabis (1990). She championed overlooked artists such as Henri Laurens, Serge Férat, and second-tier Cubists. In 2019, she became the first woman to head the SNA, serving until 2023. The gallery is now run by her daughters Florence Berès-Montanari and Capucine Montanari-Fleury.
