Paris Opera Musicians Launch Self-Governing Philopéra Orchestra

Musicians affiliated with the Opéra national de Paris have established Philopéra, an innovative symphony orchestra managed collectively by its members, marking a first in France. Scheduled to make its inaugural performance on 6 September 2026 at the Palais Garnier, the ensemble will be conducted by Daniel Harding, featuring Schubert's Symphony No. 3 and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 'Titan'. Founded by musicians from the Paris Opera Orchestra, Philopéra aims to provide additional platforms for performing symphonic works beyond the realms of opera and ballet. While functioning as an independent association, it draws inspiration from musician-led groups like the Vienna Philharmonic. The Paris Opera Orchestra will remain intact, allowing its musicians to balance their opera responsibilities with this new venture. Philopéra has also launched a website and social media presence, indicating its aspirations for longevity as a symphonic entity.
