Palestine exhibition at Canadian human rights museum sparks political feud

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) in Winnipeg opened 'Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present' on 27 June, an 11-metre-long exhibition about Palestinian displacement. Before opening, an Israeli organization threatened legal action. On 29 June, Canadian Heritage Minister Marc Miller criticized the exhibition, calling it an 'error' and stating that failing to identify Hamas as a terrorist organization and not stating that Hamas intended to kill Jews were 'unfortunate errors in curation.' Miller suggested the board was not allowed to see the exhibition beforehand. On 30 June, NDP leader Avi Lewis accused Miller of 'unacceptable political interference' and called for his retraction and apology. CMHR director of public affairs Rorie McLeod countered that the museum has repeatedly referred to Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack as a terrorist attack and that the board was regularly briefed. The museum has a content revision process and has forwarded Miller's concerns. Competing campaigns for and against the exhibition have each garnered over 11,000 signatures. The exhibition runs until 30 November 2028.
