Other Matter Leather: bio-leather from recycled signage film debuts at 3 Days of Design
Design studio Other Matter has launched Other Matter Leather, an upholstery material made by recycling its own petrochemical-free signage film, OM Signage Film. The algae-based bioplastic film, launched last year as a sustainable alternative to PVC vinyl for shop window decals and exhibition text, is now collected and re-boiled with charcoal to create a leather-like sheet. The material debuted at Melbourne Design Week in May and is on display at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen as part of the Australian group exhibition Latitude. The first products are a Made by Morgen seating range, originally upholstered in leather. Other Matter founder Jessie French emphasizes the closed-loop economic model, noting that most recycling fails on economics, not chemistry. The studio has worked with Australia's CSIRO to scale production. Other Matter won surface design of the year at the 2025 Dezeen Awards for its signage film. Aesop will host installations using the signage film at its Nyhavn and Kronprinsensgade stores.
