Oskouei Studio's Bomb Cloud Sculpture Rises in Adobe Inside Abandoned Lisbon School

exhibition · 2026-09-28

In an abandoned school in Lisbon, Portugal, Iranian artists Saman and Sasan Oskouei from Brooklyn have crafted an installation titled The Weight of the Soil, measuring 300 × 250 × 280 cm. This piece, constructed from adobe, soil, straw, sand, water, and wood, symbolizes a bomb cloud. Built directly on-site, it showcases a simple wooden structure enveloped in adobe layers, emphasizing the texture of the earth. The artwork shifts the narrative from the moment of explosion to its consequences, juxtaposing destruction with the enduring nature of soil. Having been vacant for 15 years, the school’s dilapidated architecture is woven into the installation, connecting themes of education and devastation. The project was submitted via designboom's DIY feature and edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
